Why should you consider recommending mechanical venting of problem fireplaces?? If you are in the remodeling industry, chances are that you have had a customer that looked to you for a solution to a smoking fireplace. Smoke during start-up and slow-down and soot problems inside the house are typical indications that venting of the fireplace is not sufficient. The symptoms are not only messy and annoying, but they can be dangerous and unhealthy as well. Here are a few examples of causes of soot and smoke problems: • The flue is too small (or too large) • The chimney is too short (or too high) • Location of the chimney/house: At the ocean, on a hill, near high buildings or trees, etc. • Location of the fireplace (the basement fireplace is very often a challenge to get to work) • Poor design of the fireplace and the smoke chamber. • See-through fireplace, large fireplace opening, island-type • Well insulated (air-tight) home For some of these fireplaces, there is only one option to fix the problem: Mechanical venting. Mechanical venting of fireplaces is becoming more common, and it is indeed the only solution that is guaranteed to work. Go to www.chimneyfans.com for more information on these and check out some of the case-stories. Installing a chimney fan on your customer’s house will not only give you a very satisfied customer – it will also allow you to add a new profit center to your business. And the fans are easy to install (no demolition/changes to the fireplace needed, quiet and easy operation, low profile (so not very noticeable on the house)) – and for new fireplaces, you can now be a little more innovative with design of the fireplace opening AND the flue lay-out. The fan is mounted on top of the chimney, and a simple control unit is installed near the fireplace. The fan runs at variable speed, so that you can replicate natural draft – thereby not pulling more air out of the house than you would, had sufficient natural draft been available. The motor is completely enclosed, so maintenance is minimal – and energy-use of the fan is the equivalent of a light bulb! Call us at 770-587-3238 for more information on these fans – we will also be happy to discuss your options for controls.
