Prep Materials and Study Groups
NARI provides a comprehensive study guide manual to applicants for the program to which they applied. Each study guide provides an organized approach to preparing for the examination, covering each major section of the exam and highlighting (as appropriate) the examination objectives, cross-reference system, review and discussion questions, key terms, explanatory notes, and sample exam questions. Texts related to managing a contracting business are also provided as a valuable reference tool for the business management portion of the CR, CRS, CRA, and CKBR exams. Additional "suggested reading" references are listed in the study guide.
In addition to these printed materials, local Study Groups-coordinated by local NARI chapters and supported by the national office of NARI-are formed to help candidates prepare for the examination by providing a more structured approach to studying and by creating a forum for peer discussion. Most chapters are eager to coordinate Study Groups, but first need to know that you-and others-are interested in forming a Group. Many chapters charge a fee for coordinating the Study Group, providing a Study Group Leader, securing a meeting room, etc. Be sure to check these details with your local chapter. You do not have to work for a NARI member company to become certified or to join a Study Group, though NARI membership makes you eligible for reduced application and exam fees.
Participation in a Certification Study Group is optional and flexible. Although participation is not required, it is strongly encouraged as a way to prepare for any of the NARI certification exams.
Study Group members choose-as a group-when, where, and how long to meet before taking the exam. Most Study Groups meet 8 to 10 times for about 2 hours each. Study Groups are facilitated by a Study Group Leader, usually someone who has already become certified and/or who has experience facilitating workshops. The Study Group Leader will direct the flow of the Group and ensure that participants cover all of the material in the Study Guide Manual. Study Groups work best when all participants join the discussion, so you will be encouraged to add your opinions and experiences. You will be expected to have read the appropriate Study Guide Manual text prior to each Study Group meeting. The Study Group Leader will be the Group's contact person for and with the national office of NARI.
