RESIDENTIAL HISTORICAL RENOVATION/RESTORATION

NATIONAL WINNER
HANDCRAFTED HOMES INC.
Roswell, Ga.
www.handcraftedhomes-inc.com

This 107-year-old home on the National Register of Historical Places took five months to research and locate materials for the restoration, including roofing material, tile, corbels and ribbons and bows and trim.

The hidden gutters were difficult to build the way they were originally built and still make sure they drained properly. The downspout system was redesigned, and a custom conductor was installed to make sure water didn’t flow onto the moldings below. The brick exterior was leaking into the interior walls of the home, so it needed to be tuck-pointed, as did the chimneys.

One of the largest challenges was to install trim pieces accurately. Mock-ups from original parts and drawings were made of frieze details, and written instructions were made regarding the process.
