Professionalism: A Definition in the Remodeling Industry

Professionalism has been a topic dominating articles in remodeling industry publications and social network discussions over the past year.  As an industry that struggles with a persistent negative perception of remodeling contractors, the leadership of the National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI) grappled with a working definition of what it means to be a professional in this industry.  Just what should consumers look for in hiring a professional for a home improvement project?

At its January 2013 meeting, the Executive Committee of NARI developed this living definition.  The committee believes that following criteria characterizes a remodeling professional:

Demonstrates a commitment to education and training

  • Holds, maintains, and utilizes credentials,  including certifications,  which are recognized by the industry and made known to consumers (e.g., NARI, other associations, states, vendors, government)
  •  Participates in seminars, Webinars, podcasts
  • Current with industry publications and communications

Exhibits ethical conduct and behavior

  • Demonstrates adherence to NARI Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice
  •  Demonstrates appropriate behavior on social networks
  • Possesses third-party reviews and references

Demonstrates trustworthiness

  • Provides references
  • Possesses a credible reputation
  • Possesses testimonials

Demonstrates organized, efficient business practices

  • Utilizes legal, detailed documents
  • Utilizes contracts, specifications
  • Utilizes accounting methods
  • Utilizes a written schedule

Membership in a recognized professional association

  • NARI (dedicated exclusively to the remodeling industry)

Demonstrates full compliance with Federal, state and local laws and regulations

  • EPA/OSHA
  • NARI Standards of Practice
  • Insurances
  • Permits
  • Licensing/registration
  • Code compliance
