4 Steps to Becoming a Better Kitchen and Bath Designer

Guest Blog by Rita Melkonian

If you want to excel as a kitchen and bath designer and remodeler, you can’t remain stagnant. You have to keep up with the times and continuously learn about the changes within the industry. Whether you read up on current events, take training courses, or attend tradeshows, a continued and active interest in the world of interior design is a necessity to succeed within the business.

But bettering yourself as a kitchen and bath designer and remodeler doesn’t only mean brushing up on your technical and creative skills. It also means polishing your people skills to better understand your clients so you can deliver the kitchen and bathroom they’ve always dreamt of.

Here are four easy steps that will help you become a better kitchen and bath designer.

Step 1: Listen to your clients

The most important step to becoming a better designer is listening to your clients. Even if you are an industry expert, you cannot ignore your clients’ wishes. During the initial consultation, ask relevant questions to really get a sense of what they want and need from their space.

Do not bombard them with technical talk and try not to impose your opinions too much. Just listen, take note, ask the right questions, and internalize their needs before moving forward. Remember, the space you’re building is all about them, so play close attention to what your clients have to say.

Step 2: Invest in training & courses

If you want to stay up to date, you need to continue learning. If you’re using an interior design software to design kitchens and baths, you should know how to use it to its full extent. There might be features and functionality that you’re unfamiliar with but that can help make your designs exponentially better, so investing in software training can help you become a better designer.

You should also look into taking design courses to brush up on your skills. They can be loads of fun and you’ll end up learning things that you wouldn’t otherwise have known about. Investing in courses will offer you exciting new challenges, will help you gain new perspectives, and will ultimately make you a better kitchen & bath designer.

Step 3: Keep up with trends

As you know, interior design trends are constantly evolving. There are new color trends, furniture trends, and layout trends every year. And as trends evolve, so should you. As a remodeler, you cannot advance your career if you’re stuck on outdated trends, which is why you should always be on the lookout for what’s new within the industry.

If you want to keep up with kitchen & bath design trends, all you need to do is invest some of your time into it. Read interior design blogs, subscribe to trendy magazines, follow industry leaders, watch webinars – that sort of thing.

Step 4: Attend industry events

If there are remodeler or interior design tradeshows and events near you, you should600x450_NARI_Audience attend them. No excuses. We’re not suggesting you fly across the country and pay hundreds of dollars (although some shows are worth it), but if you hear about an event where you’ll be able to learn about new trends and meet people within the industry, don’t hesitate.

Being part of the remodeling community will help you grow as a remodeler and designer. Attending industry events allows you to network and build connections with other remodelers. It also allows you to learn from your peers, build brand awareness, and even find vendors for your business.
