Designer Helps Clients Create Spaces with Personality

PR_40U40.pngLike many in the remodeling industry, Elena Eskandari comes from a family of remodelers. Originally from Russia and trained in Fine Arts, she made a career change and received her BA in Interior Design in 2009. Learn more about a ProRemodeler Magazine's 2019 "40 Under 40" winner.

Finding a design role after the Great Recession was not easy, but Elena Eskandari was able to gain valuable experience with a number of design related jobs. She was then invited to work for CASE Architects & Remodelers of Falls Church, VA, a long-standing member of NARI Metro DC. Being named one of ProRemodeler Magazine's "40 Under 40" in 2019 is wonderful recognition for her hard work.

In her design role at CASE, Elena’s work is focused on interior design and renovation, including kitchens, baths, bars and basements. “It’s exciting to work with clients who are willing to take some risks,” she comments. “Of course, we design a lot of white kitchens, but it is fun to add color.” Elena also enjoys helping clients understand trade-offs and how to make the best decision to reflect their personality and how they want to enjoy the renovated space.

Trending Ideas in 2019

“Color. We are seeing blue everywhere – from an accent wall, to center island color, or bottom cabinets, blue is a great color of choice,” Elena added. “It’s really interesting to see how appliance manufacturers are getting into the mix. Now more than ever we are seeing color. Not the same stainless steel that has dominated in past years.”

Another trend is the innovative and interesting use of classic white subway tile. “The tile is classic, but today we see different patterns that bring new energy to the space. Herringbone running parallel to the counter or vertically is huge. Running offset patterns, playing with scale. It’s interesting to see how a classic can be new by changing the pattern.”

Client Look Books

When asked how the Internet and social media sites have changed Elena’s business, you can hear the excitement in her voice. “It’s great how clients use Pinterest, Instagram or Houzz. They have an easy way to build look books or boards. Having a visual resource helps the design team build a shared vocabulary with their clients.

But it’s not just about designing beautiful kitchens and bathrooms. Elena brings her skills as a listener to support couples when making design decisions. “It’s true. We are a little bit therapist/marriage counselor, but it’s great to create a design that appeals to both partners. It is a win-win when each person feels like they are heard and they get to incorporate something they love.”
