NARI of Madison assist needy residents with repairs

2014 CotY Chapter Community Service Award

Each year NARI of Madison members support their community through a project called Hammer with a Heart organized by Project Home, a NARI member and non-profit organization dedicated to energy savings and low-cost home repairs.

Hammer with a Heart consists of about 200 skilled workers from NARI members, trades, construction companies, businesses and community volunteers who make free home repairs for Madison area low-income homeowners. Pre-selected by Project Home, the repairs focus on improving the health, safety and well-being of the homeowner.

Volunteers have added or repaired dented doors, broken windows, bumpy floors, leaking roofs and water heaters among other upgrades to provide more than $1 million in home repairs since the program started in 2002.

About half of the material used for repairs is donated by local companies. NARI members Jay Statz, CR, Statz Construction Services LLC , and Tim Sweeney, CR, of Sweeney Construction have spearheaded the NARI Madison contribution of the project for over ten years. Tim solicits volunteer labor and material donations from NARI members. This year, NARI Madison chapter counted over 50 volunteers and 20 member companies who donated time or materials for the nine residences selected by Project Homes.

Other repairs included replacing windows, doors, floors and landscape work for an elderly woman. “NARI Madison members remark that one of the best parts of Hammer with a Heart is how inclusive it is—all a volunteer needs is their hands and a positive attitude and the rest is taught on-site,” says Kathy Raab, CAE, Executive Director, NARI of Madison chapter. “This year’s volunteers included handymen and contractors but also supporting members and even NARI office staff.”

“The true value of the repairs, Jay Statz says, “is the grateful recipients. They can’t find words enough to express how much this brings them peace of mind.”
