Each year NARI of Madison members support their community through a project called Hammer with a Heart organized by Project Home, a NARI member and non-profit organization dedicated to energy savings and low-cost home repairs.

How I built My Business: Nar Fine Carpentry, Inc.

I began working as an apprentice for my two uncles, who were contractors building new homes, during the summer that I was fourteen. After graduating high school, I went to school for architecture, but decided I was better suited for hands-on work. Working for a builder in San Francisco, CA, further honed my skills; I knew every tool, every phase, and every building situation by the time I was eighteen, soon after, becoming the lead foreman on robust projects.

Kansas City NARI Members Rebuild Decks at Hillcrest Transitional Housing-Platte County

The sounds of hammers and saws filled the air as members from the Kansas City NARI rolled up their shirt sleeves and got to work on their 2014 annual community service project. Meredyth Melcher, NARI Board Chairperson, had suggested helping the Hillcrest Transitional Housing of Platte County in Kansas City —a unique place that offers homeless families free fully furnished apartments, food and education. Hillcrest’s primary objective is to move its residents from homelessness to self-sufficiency within 90 days. Since the Platte County facility opened in 2002, Hillcrest has served 300 families.
