Lead Renovation, Repair & Painting Rule resources

On April 22, 2010, the EPA’s Lead Renovation, Repair & Painting Rule went into effect. This means if you’re working in a home built before 1978, you must be in compliance with this rule.

Here’s a summary of the rule:

  • Use “Renovate Right” pamphlet (this brochure can be purchased in packs of 50 at the NARI Store)
  • Is implemented through EPA except in the following states: Alabama, Delaware, Georgia, Iowa, Kansas, Massachusetts, Mississippi,  North Carolina, Oklahoma, Oregon, Rhode Island, Utah, Washington and Wisconsin
  • Renovation firms must be EPA certified
  • Applicable buildings include
    • All pre-1978 rental property
    • Pre-1978 owner-occupied housing
    • Day care centers
    • Buildings with kindergartens with children under the age of 6
  • One person per crew must have completed one-day Lead Safe Work training and be a certified renovator.
  • Lead Safe work practices are required to be used when conducting renovation greater than 6 square feet per room interior and 20 square feet exterior
  • Windows and demolition work are always applicable
  • A cleaning verification (not clearance) is required
  • There are record-keeping requirements

If you’re working in pre-1978 homes and you’re not currently certified, you can find certified trainers here. If you have not filled out your Renovation Firm Certification Application, you can find that here.

NARI members should fax a copy of the company’s EPA Certified Lead Renovator certificate to (847) 298.9225 or e-mail a copy to info@nari.org. Your company will then show up as an EPA Lead Renovator on NARI’s Find a Professional search.
