Best Practices for Time and Cost Tracking

You’ve heard the saying, “time is money.” But it’s another matter to understand how to track time (minutes, hours, days) and why it’s important to convert it to money (dollars). This session will address a few best practices in time and cost tracking for remodeling businesses. You will learn basic approaches to recordkeeping that will help you to capture staff time accurately and to produce financial reports effectively. A few specific areas will be covered:

  • Fundamentals of staff time clock
  • Different time clock options
  • Staff compliance and efficiency
  • Review of basic transactional accounting (bookkeeping) terms
  • Relationship between time cards and Quickbooks chart of accounts
  • Important financial reports produced by Quickbooks
  • Time and cost tracking impacts on estimating and profitability
This 90-minute session (60-minute presentation, 30-minute Q&A) is intended for an owner or manager who wants to implement a new time tracking system and improve your basic comprehension of financial reports. This session might be helpful to an immediate user whose existing system isn’t producing the output you need.

The Certified Remodeler (CR) online preparatory course is a twelve week, structured study program, designed to help the attendees prepare for the CR, CRS, and CRA certification exam. 

This online prep course will develop your knowledge in the fundamentals of managing a full range remodeling operation:

  • Sound business operations and procedures necessary for operational efficiency and increased profitability
  • Key financial indicators a remodeler/business owner must manage
  • Various marketing tools remodelers use to promote their services
  • Navigating building codes and communicating with code officials
  • Job site evaluation and identifying hidden defects and unknown conditions
  • Green remodeling and building science
  • Capabilities of the various trades required on the remodeling project and how to determine if the work is performed correctly

WHERE: Online teleconference
LENGTH: Twelve consecutive weeks. One day per week, in two-hour sessions (5 pm -7 pm CST)

This prep course will develop your knowledge in the fundamentals of managing kitchen and bath renovations:

Strategies and Best Practices for Accurate Estimating – a three-part educational series

Don’t miss this must-attend, three-part, in-depth educational series presented by Tim Faller – Senior Consultant and Estimating Expert. Tim will walk you through the goals, numbers, challenges, and solutions to help you create more accurate estimates. The ultimate goal of this comprehensive training is to help you understand how to bring your estimates within one percentage point of actual numbers.

Series Sessions:

1. Setting the Foundation for Effective Estimating - March 2, 2021 at 12 pm Central Time (90 minutes)
The first part of this series will focus on setting the foundation for effective estimating. We will cover the goals, definitions, and the “head trash” or challenges that many contractors face. We will also discuss the gathering of information to ensure an estimate is accurate, including the use of checklists and 3D imaging.

2. Effective Pricing Strategies - March 9, 2021 at 12 pm Central Time (90 minutes)
Session 2 will focus on the actual pricing involved in estimating. This will stress using data from job costing for estimating, effective pricing strategies like sqft, linear ft, unit pricing and when they should and should not be used. We will address correctly calculating labor burden as well as the challenges of T&M pricing and using allowances effectively.

3. Estimating Software, Change Orders, and Sales - March 16, 2021 at 12 pm Central Time (90 minutes)
Session 3 will start with a quick look at some software that may help in estimating and what that software must do to be effective. We will continue by discussing the actual estimating process, getting the right sale price, estimating Change Orders and some of the unique challenges to them. We will end with a discussion of the impact sales skill has on estimating.

  • Universal design applications used in residential remodeling
  • Construction techniques used to implement universal design to a remodeling project
  • Plumbing and electrical systems unique to universal design
  • Differences between model building codes and ones described in the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)
